Reason for Bayer Leverkusen vs Atletico Madrid UEFA Champions League
|Bayer Leverkusen +190|
A defeat on matchday three of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) group stage ensured that Bayer Leverkusen come into this match after five consecutive UCL fixtures without a win (D1, L4). With two of those losses coming at the hands of Atlético Madrid, a clear psychological deficit already exists.
Leverkusen may have been hoping to find solace in the Champions League, but that hasn’t happened, as they’ve lost three out of three and are thus on the brink of elimination.
On paper, they’ve struggled, but realistically, the Germans haven’t been terrible. They’ve just not had the rub of the green. They were comfortably the better side when losing out narrowly to Lokomotiv Moscow on match-day one, while there was very little between the pair in the reverse of this fixture, which saw Atletico win by a goal to nil a fortnight ago.
Leon Bailey was sent off at the weekend on his comeback from injury but is free to play here if selected. Daley Sinkgraven and Lars Bender are both sidelined for the Bundesliga outfit.
Key Player: With goals in three of his last five competitive appearances at home, Kevin Volland (LEV) will be aiming to find his first UCL strike of the campaign.

Atletico aren’t always the most creative side, but they’ve done a much better job of forging scoring opportunities than Wednesday’s hosts. The visitors come into this match having deservedly scored five goals in Group D, while they’ve also done an excellent job of stopping teams from playing, keeping a clean sheet against Lokomotiv and in the reverse of this fixture.
Atlético, contrastingly, remain unbeaten in their last six group stage matches (W4, D2), with five clean sheets and four wins-to-nil. Domestically, they have shown some vulnerability on the road, winning just one of their last four La Liga (LL) clashes as an away favourite (D2, L1).
When the pair met a fortnight ago, clear-cut chances were few and far between, but that suited Atletico far more than Leverkusen. Simeone’s men are happy to keep things low-key, as they’ve got the quality to stop teams and come up with the good offensively when it matters most.
Neither Jose Gimenez nor Stefan Savic recovered in time to face Sevilla at the weekend and both are doubts coming into this game. Joao Felix is not far away from returning to first-team action but is not expected to feature here, while Sime Vrsaljko is out.
Key Player: Álvaro Morata recently became the only Atlético player to score on multiple occasions on the road this LL season, after recording his fourth consecutive competitive start with a goal.
