USA vs Canada 2022 World Cup Qualifying 9/5/21 Tips, Free Picks, Predictions

Two of the favourites to qualify for the 2022 World Cup from the CONCACAF region go head to head at the weekend, as the USA host Canada at the Nissan Stadium in Nashville.

After failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the United States made a number of changes to prevent the humiliation from happening again.

Head coach Gregg Berhalter was named accordingly and oversaw a dominant stint for the Americans in the CONCACAF region.

Winning the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup, despite having a relatively inexperienced team, earlier this summer is proof of the progress made with Berhalter since he took office.

However, the start of the octagonal qualifying round for the 2022 World Cup with a 0-0 draw against El Salvador earlier in the week reminded the nation how difficult it can still be to qualify for the tournament.

The young team can draw many bright spots as many youngsters made their qualifying debuts for the Stars and Stripes, as well as a fifth clean sheet in a row.

In fact, the Americans have only conceded one goal in their last eight games. However, only four have been scored in his last five, a sign of his struggles heading into goal.

Like its neighbors, Canada also started this qualifying round with a weekday draw - a 1-1 draw at home against Honduras.

Playing in front of home fans for the first time in nearly two years should have been a boost for the Canadians, but they worked hard and only managed one point after a Cyle Larin penalty midway through the second half.

With all their momentum gleaned from devastating performances in the opening qualifying rounds (31 goals scored and just one conceded in six wins from six matches), Les Rouges would have expected three points to start the octagonal phase.

More recently, this weekend's visitors also had a good run to the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals earlier this summer, where they finally lost to Mexico after a 2-1 loss.

Canada heads to the United States with a rematch in sight, following a 4-1 loss to the United States in 2019 followed by a 1-0 loss in early summer when the Americans won the Gold Cup.

Neither team is conceding much, so it could stay tight for long periods in the game, but the hosts should be of sufficient quality to start their qualifying campaign.
