Varlamov turned away 26 of 27 shots in a 3-1 win over Philadelphia in Game 3 on Sunday. Varlamov was chased to the bench in Game 2 but rebounded nicely Saturday with a near-perfect performance. The only goal he allowed was a Tyler Pitlick shot through heavy traffic late in the first period. Varlamov slammed the door the rest of the way and now possesses a sparkling 1.69 GAA and .935 save percentage in the postseason.

Carter Hart Philadelphia Flyers

24 W | 13 L | 0.914 SV%

Hart yielded three goals on 29 shots in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Islanders in Game 3. The game turned when Leo Komarov scored with just 5.1 seconds left in the second period to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead. The Flyers were unable to generate any offense the rest of the way in support of Hart and now trail in the series. Hart has given up three goals in each of the first three games of the series, registering a .901 save percentage.

The last time the New York Islanders were this close to the NHL's last four version, their top two Eastern Conference semi-final scorers, Anders Lee and Jean-Gabriel Pageau, were two years and six months old, respectively. . .

Head coach Barry Trotz was 30 years old and a coach of the American Hockey League.

But don't expect Trotz and his players to focus too much on the time that has passed since the Islanders have not been where they will be Tuesday night.

The Islanders will look to reach the conference finals for the first time since 1993, when they face the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 5 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series in Toronto.

The Islanders took a 3-1 series lead in Game 4 on Sunday night when Pageau scored the tiebreaker goal in the third period in a 3-2 victory.

With another win, the sixth-seeded Islanders will continue the NHL's Cinderella summer story and end the league's longest drought in the conference finals. New York advanced, as it was then called, to the 1993 Wales Conference Final by knocking out the Washington Capitals in the Patrick Division semifinals before upsetting two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in a final of the seven-game Patrick Division. Serie.

The only other team that has not reached the conference final since 1993 is the Columbus Blue Jackets, who did not start playing until 2000.

But the Islanders, who were one spot out of eighth in the Eastern Conference playoffs when the regular season ended due to the March 11 pandemic, are not immersed in the history they can create. Tuesday, especially after winning on Sunday. despite what Trotz called his worst game of the playoffs.

Teams remaining 3-1 are 29-284 (9.3%) to win a best-of-7 Stanley Cup playoff series, including 0-6 in the first round this season.

Although they fell into a hole that has historically been difficult to get out of, the seeded Flyers hope to build some momentum in Sunday's loss.

In the first round of this season, the teams that lost 3-1 in a streak were 0-6 in winning streaks. But that didn't matter to Philadelphia, which had the final 12 shots of the second period, defeating the Islanders 17-3 in the period and 38-33 overall.

And Flyers coach Alain Vigneault has already staged such comebacks. He led the New York Rangers after a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Penguins in the 2014 second round. His Rangers did it again in 2015, when a 3-1 deficit did not stop New York from beating the Washington Capitals (coached by Trotz) in the second round.
