|2021 Ryder Cup 2nd Friday Morning Foursome|
The 43rd Ryder Cup is here. Due to the COVID pandemic, golf enthusiasts have had to wait three years instead of the usual two for this intercontinental clash.
Captains Steve Stricker (USA) and Padraig Harrington (EUR) announced their starting lineups for Friday morning's Foursomes session at the opening ceremony Thursday at Whistling Straits.
There are four groups leaving, so the captains had to make some tough decisions to figure out who to sit with. For Stricker, they are Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English, Tony Finau and Scottie Scheffler. Harrington seats Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry and Bernd Weisberger.
Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia (EUR) vs. Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth (USA) - 8:05 am ET.
In this gathering of power, world number one Rahm and Garcia, the all-time leader in Ryder Cup history, will take control of Thomas and Spieth, who were 3-1-0 partners as partners in Paris in 2018 Rahm y García has shown a little more shape lately and that makes a difference.
Four heavyweights open the Ryder Cup. This is exactly what we've been waiting for three years. Spieth is 2-1-2 in a foursome and 1-1 with Thomas. Sergio is 10-4-3 in all-time format. If he wins, he will be the winner of all the points in the format. He now has the world's number 1 partner in a new version of the Spanish Armada. I think Sergio is up to the task, Rahm is playing with passion and the European team takes a point away from the USA team in the header game.
Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa (USA) vs. Paul Casey and Viktor Hovland (EUR) - 8:21 a.m. ET
Johnson and Morikawa seem to fit the bill perfectly: Johnson's power and Morikawa's work with his irons. Casey and Hovland seem very suitable as well, as they are both excellent attackers and strong to begin with. The game goes to 18 and everything squared, good for ½ point for each team.
I really like this couple of DJ and Collin. We are talking about the straightest rider and the best iron player in the game. That is a winning combination for me. However, I'm afraid neither of us is getting into good shape this week. It's a match that Casey and Hovland, who I think have the potential to be Francesco Molinari's figurehead in this Ryder Cup, can steal if one of the Americans hasn't found his mojo. But I choose Team USA.
Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick (EUR) vs. Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger (United States) - 8:37 a.m. ET.
Florida State teammates Berger and Koepka will face European veterans Westwood and Fitzpatrick. Koepka said that his health is fine, that he is a four-time Major Champion and that Berger has been playing very well lately. Westwood has been out of his best shape since March. A victory for the United States team.
I love what Stricker did here by bringing together two former Florida State Seminole teammates. Berger is a bird machine and, as he said today, team golf "brought out a different side of me that I really didn't know I had." He will bring the energy and Koepka has to comply. Westwood and Fitzpatrick could beat them to death. I have my concerns about his putting. Team USA wins this one.
