The preseason favorites in the NFC East will meet in Week 16 without their franchise quarterbacks starting and with their playoff hopes in the hands of a team that didn't expect to be in the race so late.

Believe it or not, the pandemic has nothing to do with Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles visiting Andy Dalton and the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, and everyone on both teams is probably wondering what's going on in a game starting 20 minutes before in Washington.

Philadelphia (4-9-1) benched Carson Wentz three games ago, and Hurts won the first start of his career before another solid performance by the rookie in a 33-26 loss to Arizona pushed the defending champion from the NFC is on the brink of elimination.

The Cowboys (5-9) have stayed alive by winning back-to-back games for the first time in coach Mike McCarthy's first season, with Dalton improving to 3-4 as a starter after Dak Prescott's ankle injury ended the season in Week 5.

The only way the winner among teams that have combined to win the past four division titles can maintain that streak is if Washington loses to Carolina. Washington's start was delayed for three hours, making the games nearly simultaneous.

Both teams have dealt with a lot of injuries, the Cowboys hit the hardest on the offensive line, while the Eagles struggled there and in the receiving pool. But bad play has also been a problem, primarily with the Dallas and Wentz defense, among other things for the Eagles.

Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliott hopes to play despite a diseased calf that kept him out of a game due to injury for the first time in his career in last week's 41-33 win over San Francisco. The two-time running champion didn't practice last week as he planned to get ready against the Niners. Elliott says he's further along this week.

Since 2017 when they won the Super Bowl, the Eagles are 11-2 in games that must win or would be eliminated from the playoffs or mathematically eliminated from contention.

The Cowboys have a turnover margin of plus seven in the last two games after being among the worst in the NFL with minus 13 in the first 12 games. Those seven takeoffs in two games came after Dallas forced just 11 in the first 12 games.

Cornerback Darius Slay is expected to return after missing a game due to a concussion, but the Eagles will remain without starting safety Rodney McLeod (torn ACL) and starting cornerback Avonte Maddox (knee). Arizona's Kyler Murray took advantage of a secondary that missed three starters and threw for 406 yards, his career-best.

Safety Jalen Mills was the only available starter against the Cardinals, so the Eagles relied on Michael Jacquet, Kevon Seymour, K’von Wallace and Marcus Epps.

Philadelphia Eagles vs Dallas Cowboys Prediction

The Cowboys would be a huge favorite had it not been for their terrible defense. They just can't stop opponents, and Hurts should be very successful against them. Dallas is expected to have some success as well. This will be a great game for Philadelphia to win, but they won't make up the difference.

WINNER: Dallas Cowboys @ +2.5
