All-Star guard Damian Lillard energized Portland in his return from a groin injury and looks to build on the effort when the Trail Blazers visit the Phoenix Suns on Friday. Lillard missed six games due to a groin injury but made four 3-pointers and scored 22 points in Wednesday's 125-104 home win over the Washington Wizards.
- The Suns posted a 122-116 road victory on Dec. 30 to end an 11-game losing streak against the Trail Blazers.
|Reason for Portland Trail Blazers vs Phoenix Suns NBA Basketball Picks|
If the Portland Trail Blazers are going to bridge the gap of 3 1/2 games between them and the Memphis Grizzlies, the team currently ranks last in the Western Conference playoffs, games against problematic teams like the Phoenix Suns. It will be a priority.
This will be the case on Friday night when the Blazers travel to Arizona to play against the Suns.
Portland won two consecutive games and welcomed star goalkeeper Damian Lillard to a groin injury he suffered on February 12. Lillard scored 22 points in a 125-104 victory over the Washington Wizards.
Portland has had solid performances by several players. The Hassan Whiteside center recorded its 48th double-double of the season with 24 points and 16 rebounds, Carmelo Anthony had a maximum of 25 points and C.J. McCollum added 22.
But with 19 games remaining in the regular season, Portland must take action if the Blazers expect to reach the playoffs for the seventh consecutive season.
A key stretch awaits us, as Portland opens a six-game house on Saturday. The return of Lillard is a big boost.
The Suns have lost four in a row and have essentially played the run for eighth place, ahead of the Grizzlies for seven games. Phoenix lost third best scorer Kelly Oubre Jr. for at least four weeks after a torn meniscus surgery on his right knee earlier this week.
Oubre has a career average of 18.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game this season.
Phoenix could also be without Ayton on Friday. On Tuesday he left home defeat 123-114 against the Toronto Raptors with a left ankle injury with only 2:50 left.
Coach Monty Williams does not believe Ayton is available Friday against the Blazers. Ayton also missed the last game at the Suns against the Blazers, a 111-110 loss in December.
Ayton was serving the final days of a league suspension that day. Oubre scored 24 points in the game, won by the Blazers in a late basket and a free throw by Lillard.
If Ayton does not play, the Suns will lose their career average of 19 points and 12 rebounds (although they have only played 30 games this season).
Portland has won its last five games in Phoenix.
