Preview, Prediction and Picks
The Golden State Warriors and host Los Angeles Lakers will add a new chapter to their 72-year rivalry when they meet in an NBA game Wednesday night at Staples Center.
The Warriors won a field playoff Sunday against the Memphis Grizzlies to place eighth in the Western Conference, while the Lakers lost a season-long tiebreaker against Portland to place seventh, creating the all-Californian pair in Game 1 of the West. -With a 7-8 play-in game.
The winner will advance to the main draw of the Western Conference Playoffs as the No. 7 seed and will face the Phoenix Suns in the first round.
The loser will also have a chance to reach the playoffs, but must win at home on Friday against the winner of Wednesday's game 9-10 between the Memphis Grizzlies and the San Antonio Spurs to move on and face Utah, first in the series. . Jazz.
The Lakers took two of the three from the Warriors in the regular season, demanding two full-scale revenge moves after suffering a shocking 115-113 home loss in January in a game Los Angeles comfortably led most of the time.
The Lakers beat their rivals by 26 and 31 points in the next two games, one at home and the last in San Francisco, leaving no room for doubt as they took advantage of an accumulated 138-94 halftime advantage.
The Lakers posted a season-high 62.8 percent from the field and had a triple-double of 22 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds from LeBron James in the final game on March 15 in San Francisco.
James sprained his right ankle five days later against Atlanta and missed 26 of the last 30 games of the regular season when the Lakers dropped in the rankings.
James spooked Lakers fans when he traded the injury in Sunday's regular season finale in New Orleans, but then promised it wouldn't affect his condition for Wednesday's game.
In fact, James has spent more time in the past three days worrying about the MVP voting than his own health, which is why he personally chose Warriors guard Stephen Curry.
Curry closed his second career title Sunday with 46 points in the Warriors' 113-10 home win over Memphis. It was the 21st game of 30 or more points in his last 24 outings, a period in which he averaged 36.9 points.
Curry hasn't had any of those 30-point games against the Lakers this season. He amassed 26 points in Los Angeles' victory in January, but averaged just 21.5 in the two losses faced that followed.
The Warriors have won six in a row, the Lakers five in a row. Golden State coach Steve Kerr loves the way he plays his team.
