Cincinnati Reds vs Chicago Cubs MLB Baseball Betting Picks, Prediction 7/26/2021
The Cincinnati Reds are set to embark on a seven-game road trip Monday against the Chicago Cubs after struggling at home 3-6 after the All-Star break.
Despite the difficulties, Reds manager David Bell believes his club has shown some positive signs of late. Sunday's 10-6 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals was one example.
After falling 9-3 in four innings, Cincinnati scored the next three runs and brought the possible tie at home late in the game. Missing 13 runners and hitting 3 of 17 with men in scoring position is not optimal, of course, but creating opportunities is always encouraging.
Left-hander Wade Miley (8-4, 2.72 ERA) will start as the Reds look to stay in pursuit of the National League playoffs. Miley is 2-1 with a 4.88 ERA in four career starts for him at Wrigley Field and a 7-4 record with a 4.29 ERA in 13 against the Cubs all-time.
Unlike the Reds, the Cubs are likely to be in sell mode as the July 30 deadline approaches. Chicago closed the first half with 13 losses in 15 games, including 11 consecutive losses from June 25 to July 6.
The slip effectively knocked out the team, accelerating speculation about how the front office would approach the deadline.
Cubs manager David Ross admitted Sunday that lingering uncertainty has had an impact on the clubhouse.
Infielder / outfielder David Bote agrees with Ross's last point, saying, "In anything in life, there is no reason to fear something that may and may not even happen. It does not happen."
Bote had been removed from much of the talk about the trade deadline through Sunday. He was activated from the disabled list before the Cubs' 5-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks after missing 48 games with a separated left shoulder. Bote scored against Arizona in his first action since May 29.
Ross wonders if the high-profile nature of some of the players potentially on the trading block, including franchise mainstays Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, who threw back-to-back blasts in Sunday's first inning, has spurred the narrative.
Joey Votto has scored back-to-back games for the Reds, who remain without outfielder Nick Castellanos, who injured his wrist after being hit with a pitch on July 16.
Right-hander Kyle Hendricks (12-4, 3.61) is expected to start for Chicago. In 20 starts against the Reds in his career, the right-hander is 6-5 with a 4.24 ERA.
Ross said second baseman Javier Baez suffered a below-knee injury while running the bases in the eighth inning Sunday, but did not have an update. Baez stayed in the game.
